Sainte Foy is a small ski resort located high in the Tarentaise Valley, right in the heart of the French Alps. Our chalet is in the centre of the resort, at the foot of the chairlift and right on the bike trails. The thick forests which blanket the mountain are riddled with dozens of singletrack trails. Our local trails were mostly built by hand many years ago to allow the passage of people and animals from the winter byres up to the summer grazing pastures. This gives them a unique combination of perfect not-too-steep, not-too-flat gradient, incredible drainage (no mud, ever!) and a surface which, when it's not rocky, rooty and technical is a deep bed of pine needles which are silky smooth and grippy to ride on. The trails offer a good spread of technical difficulty, from fast, flowing trails like The Thin Red Line and Whisky & Rye through to technical rock-fests like Ace of Spades and The Beer Run. The local resort runs a 4x4 uplift service. Slightly odd when there are perfectly good chairlifts sitting unused in the summer, but it actually works really well. The uplift runs to the top of the 2nd chairlift at 2100m and picks up from way down in the valley (far below the base of the lifts). This allows us to ride all the singletrack without any climbing at all :-) The vertical drop is just short of 1,300m. To put that into context, it's more than is available from the lifts in Morzine and, in UK terms, equivalent to riding form the summit of Ben Nevis all the way to the beach in Fort William!

The resort's location at the centre of the valley means we're also only a very short drive from other world-class riding destinations, such as Les Arcs, Tignes, La Rosiere and La Thuile. Put that alongside the local trails at Sainte Foy and endless epic backcountry trails accessed via van uplift on the high road passes and you get one of the world's very best mountain-bike playgrounds.
